ASU’s YES Academy Helps Salt River Pima-Maricopa 16-Year-Old Help Language

16-year-old Maleena Deer (of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community), 16, dreams of revitalizing her language through establishing pedagogical DVDs, internet resources and classes. The 3rd annual YES Academy at Arizona State University has helped her flesh out a working plan of action over four days, along with 20 other students with various entrepreneurial aspirations that could benefit their community. Students were taught how to craft sustainable business plans, how pitch their ideas properly, how to budget responsibly, and so forth. At the end, they present their proposals to a panel of Native American entrepreneurs.

The YES Academy is hosted by ASU’s American Indian Policy Institute, and funded by the Salt River Financial Services Institution, with contributions from the Salt River Community Children’s Foundation.
