Standing Rock Lakota Teachers Trained by the LLC in SIL at Sitting Bull College

70 educators recently participated in a three week Lakota Summer Institute in Linguistics geared toward training new teachers of various levels of proficiency, on account that current instructors are on the verge of retirement after 2-3 decades of teaching. Since 2000, the number of Lakota speakers at Standing Rock has remained a constant 125 or so, despite a population rise of 200 in the last decade. This is less than half the number of Lakota speakers at Pine Ridge, and at Rosebud. The Lakota Language Consortium‘s methodology for language pedagogy boasts the following principles:

    1. Take an immersion approach (but still have workbooks for reference)
    2. Teach modern situations and contemporary vocabulary
    3. Encourage participation and group work
