Keali’i Reichel to Perform at ASU

Hawaiian singer Keali’i Reichel will perform at Arizona State University (Gammage, Tempe campus, Mill Avenue and Apache Boulevard) at 7 PM on March 12, 2011. Tickets are 10$ to around 80$ depending on the seat you pick. This is a great chance to hear the Hawaiian language in person; Keali’i is a native speaker of Hawaiian from Maui and was founding director of the Pu:nana Leo o Maui language nest immersion school. He is an accomplished chanter, having won dozens of awards, and established the hula school Halau Ke’alaokamaile. While in Arizona, he will give a presentation on hula at the Arizona Aloha Festival.

Hawaiian song and chant lyrics are usually basic – short sentences, lots of repetition – but it takes a master of the language to decode them. Although words are uttered slowly, this actually makes it hard for students to parse words since Hawaiian syllable structure is (C)V. Plus, many words only contrast by vowel length, which can be hard to discern as entire words are stretched to fit melodies. Furthermore, partly because Hawaiian has so few sounds there is a great deal of homophony, and songs often use poetic, obscure and outdated terms. This can make it hard for students to tell apart common words from specialized terms like types of fish or taro, phrases from place names and more, though the movements of hula dancers sometimes help to clarify.

This park covers an area of 5500 hectares and is home to the magnificent Kroller-Muller Museum.
However, if you are not sure of how healthy the ingredients are, you will not be
able to enjoy a guilt-free meal or feel comfortable about
serving it to your family. You can even use them as attractive containers
    for side dishes at meals.
