The Lakota Language Consortium (LLC) spent about a year dubbing episodes of The Berenstain Bears in Lakota, translating the title as Mathó Waúnšila Thiwáhe (The Compassionate Bear Family), with LLC board member Ben Black Bear (Rosebud Lakota) as the voice of Papa Bear. You can catch preview screenings on:
• September 7th at the Tribal Leaders’ Summit Banquet, during the 42nd Annual United Tribes Powwow in Bismarck, ND.
• September 9th during Children’s Day
Starting September 11th at 9:00 AM, two episodes per week will air on the South Dakota Public Broadcasting (SDPB) digital channel 3 and Prairie Public Television digital channel 4, ending in November. Local access stations KOLC (Oglala Lakota College) and REZ IPTV will broadcast the show to viewers on the Pine Ridge and Cheyenne River reservations LakotaBears.com will stream episodes online.
A DVD of the episodes will be released in November.
Those involved and supporters will be recognized at an honoring ceremony held at the Grand Entry on September 8th, with dancers dressed as bears.
